1979 studies of San Francisco’s Buena Vista Park while a photography student at the San Francisco Art Institute

This essay was first developed in the spring of 1979 as a project for the Experiential Photography course at the San Francisco Art Institute. I encountered an exceptional number of complex issues related to the use and redesign of public space and of sexual politics and community participation in decision-making about environments both natural and built. In many ways, what I found in the woods in Buena Vista Park 33 years ago prefigured much of my work since then.

Gordon Brent Ingram, the spring of 1979 at the time of these first photographs of Buena Visa Park, taken by fellow student who became the celebrated photographer Del LaGrace Volcano.
